What Are You Willing To Do To Achieve Your Goals?

What would you do to achieve your goals?  I’ve been thinking about this question a lot lately because I often try every way possible to get out of the stuff in my business I don’t want to do.

You know, the pieces that force me to get uncomfortable, to learn and grow.

Rejection.

Sales conversations.

Launching something new.

Lately I’ve been obsessed with Elizabeth Gilbert’s book Big Magic. I have listened to the Audible version at least 6 times all the way through… rewinding specific parts over and over.

And this excerpt is one that sticks out to me when she’s talking about what I need to be willing to do to pursue my goals:

“What’s your favorite flavor of shit sandwich?”

… every single pursuit—no matter how wonderful and exciting and glamorous it may initially seem—comes with its own brand of shit sandwich, its own lousy side effects.

As Manson writes with profound wisdom: “Everything sucks, some of the time.”

YOU JUST HAVE TO DECIDE WHAT SORT OF SUCKAGE YOU’RE WILLING TO DEAL WITH.

So the question is not so much “What are you passionate about?” The question is “What are you passionate enough about that you can endure the most disagreeable aspects of the work?”

So… what sort of suckage ARE you willing to deal with to get your goals?

That is a question I ask myself often.

And yes, there are certain things that I really hate that I can outsource (like bookkeeping, thank goodness).

But there are certain things that I have to do to move my business forward.

The question is am I willing to do them?

That’s why I have you start off knowing your WHY.

When you know what’s at stake – the consequences of not following through on your goals – it’s a lot easier to tackle the yucky things in your business.

And often, it’s not as bad as I initially think it is.

What about you? Have you ever done something in your biz that you were SURE would be awful, but turned out to boost you forward?
