Big Marketing Blunder, Part 2 (and how it kills all hope)

You know what grinds my gears about building a business? How many so-called experts are out there peddling half-truths and preying on people's hopes, dreams, money and sanity… especially around ways to get more clients.

It doesn't have to be HARD… but you DO need a system (but most don't talk about that).

Just about everything you know about attracting clients into your online expert-based business is DEAD WRONG!

If you believe any of the lies and half-truths so-called ‘experts' spout off as gospel below, I'm going to clear some of this up for you right here, right now!

  • Create a lead magnet (aka: freebie, ethical bribe, giveaway, etc…) and people will rush to sign up for it… then somehow, some way they will magically become clients. WRONG: you need a system to get interested people to actually SEE that freebie.
  • Attend tons of events, meet lots of people and somehow, some way those event contacts will become clients. WRONG: how many times have YOU gone to an event, then come home and dumped that giant stack ‘o business cards into your desk drawer (or the trash can), never to see the light of day again?
  • Show up in Facebook groups, as a guest blogger and guest speaker to give tons of free advice and ‘value’ and somehow, some way people will beg to be your clients. WRONG: you need a system that includes a reason for them to come to your site, a relevant freebie and a stellar email series. Being a guest is just the tip of the iceberg.
  • Be ‘visible’ and ‘credible’ and somehow, some way people will hunt you down online to effortlessly become your clients. WRONG: you need a way to turn that visibility, credibility and expertise into clients with a SYSTEM.
  • Run Facebook ads, do Facebook live videos and post videos like a crazed YouTuber and somehow, some way clients will stampede (credit card in hand) to your virtual doors. WRONG: You can waste a ton of time, money and sanity on all these activities if you don't have a SYSTEM to turn your viewers into engaged subscribers.
  • Tweet, Instagram and Pinterest your fingers off because that’s how people will discover you… and then somehow, some way they’ll become *poof* become amazing clients. WRONG: you need a system to turn those social media efforts into real business clients.

Hoping, praying, meditating, dream boarding… all great to keep you focused on your goal. Not great for turning all your whirling dervish activities into clients.

And yes, I know these half truths are blindly accepted as common knowledge and THAT is exactly why it is so wrong.

What all these experts peddling the half-truths above DON’T tell you is that you must have a system to turn random people who ‘discover’ you into actual clients.

That’s easy to say… and hard to do. In fact, many people suddenly look like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde when they try to create a system…

… they're confusing and leaving people wondering ‘who are you, really?’

I see this one ALL THE TIME (even from BIG, household name companies).

It's where each piece in your marketing system is looks different, is difficult to locate and becomes muddled and confusing.

When you've got a Jekyll/Hyde deal going on, very few people will buy from you because they're befuddled by twists and turns… seemingly unrelated detours that your disconnected marketing pieces take.

And befuddled people don't hire confusing experts, or buy confusing products and don't stick around confusing websites…

Again… this is easy to say. It’s pretty hard to do well so that clients show up in your business every single week.

Think of it like a road map. Each stop on the map should bring potential clients one milepost closer to become actual clients.

But instead, most business owners have a confusing system that starts with a well-intentioned freebie…

…and leads to a baffling obstacle course where those hopeful (and potential) new clients get lost and abandon their journey… never to be heard from again.

So all that effort to get traffic to your freebie fizzles out and dies because people don’t know who you are or where you are trying to take them.
